Our sustainability plan

Water usage

All fruits and vegetables need water to grow. Climate change and a growing world population are putting increasing pressure on water availability. Frutos Tropicales and our growers work with partners throughout the supply chain to keep improving how water is managed and used.

Since 2022, our grower certification requirements have included the Global GAP Spring-Ready Irrigation and Groundwater program.

The program covers:

  • Water management plans and watershed management.
  • Water-risk assessments for farms and produce-handling units.
  • Planning for water use, distribution and irrigation.
  • Rainwater recovery and storage.
  • Identification and protection of water sources.
  • Staff training, water-risk assessment and objectives.

Food waste

Waste can never be prevented entirely, but we work with our partners to minimize it. Fruit that is damaged or does not meet fresh-export specifications may still be usable.

We process suitable fruit through our frozen programs, peeling and cutting it to customer specifications—such as chunks, dices or smoothie pieces. It can be packed in bulk for food processors or directly into retail packaging. This helps us make the most of the fruit and optimize returns for growers.

Packaging

We strive to use recyclable or reusable packaging wherever possible and to avoid plastic when it is not needed. Where packaging is necessary to extend shelf life, preventing product waste can have a greater environmental benefit than eliminating that packaging.

Our stated goal was to use only recyclable or reusable materials by 2023. The current status of that target is not documented here.
